Phil Hellmuth The Brat of Poker

He is called the Poker Brat by some, but everyone who’s played poker against him knows that he brings the real game to the table. Proud and loud owner of eleven World Series of Poker bracelets, he Phil Hellmuth currently recognized as one of the most powerful and respected forces at any game of poker.

1989 would not be able to predict his coming as the youngest player to win the main event of the World Series of Poker. At the age of twenty four, Phil Hellmuth managed to dethrone poker legend Johnny Chan in heads up play. It wouldn’t be until 2008 that someone would even come close to beating him, which Peter Eastgate managed to achieve at the age of twenty-two.

Phil Hellmuth’s tenth bracelet was awarded to him in 2006 in one thousand dollar No Limit Texas Hold’em event. Texas Hold’em in itself has become his core game as each and every one of his bracelets was earned through the community card game. A year later, his eleventh bracelet would come at the one thousand five hundred tables. This is coupled with another record, that of finishing with the most World Series of Poker cashes and has appeared at the final tables more than anyone else in the game ever. In 2008 Hellmuth would only manage a 45th place finish, though that outcome is still quite respectable. To date, his winnings have breached the five million dollar mark.

While Phil has been dominating at the World Series of Poker, this performance has not carried over to the World Poker Tour, where he has yet to even win a tournament. He has won just under one million dollars at the World Poker Tour, substantially less than at the other tournament scene. He has also happened upon other poker scenes, even coming out the champion of the third season of Late Night Poker, a well known televised poker show.

Most of his fame, unfortunately, comes not just from his achievements but from his largely abrasive remarks and comments at the poker table, sometimes even claiming that he is revolutionary player. While everyone generally agrees that he is skilled, few may agree with his assessment of his importance.

Whatever people consider the Poker Brat, it of course remains that he is a skilled and dangerous player to see across the table. The wisest players know to be on their guard and to be ready when they’re up against Phil Hellmuth.
